The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation has given the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center a three-year grant of $11.9 million so that researchers can continue the groundbreaking Dallas Heart Study.
This investigation of cardiovascular disease involving thousands of Dallas County residents was launched in 1999 by a $42 million grant from the same foundation.
The original grant also established UT Southwestern's Donald W. Reynolds Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center, headed by Dr. Helen Hobbs, one of several investigators there from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Miami.
The additional three years of funding will allow UT Southwestern researchers to continue their investigation into factors that contribute to heart disease in a large multi-ethnic group of individuals from Dallas County, Dr. Hobbs said.
Dallas Heart Study investigators have gotten detailed medical histories from more than 6,000 Dallas residents.
More than half of those participants have provided blood samples and undergone imaging studies to examine their hearts.
Dr. Hobbs and her colleagues have used this information to identify new drug targets for the prevention and treatment of heart disease.
"In the next three years, we will transform the Dallas Heart Study from a cross-sectional study into a longitudinal one," Dr. Hobbs said.
